Anyone involved in the construction industry knows how important water is. It’s used by a range of trades for countless tasks on projects, while a drinking water supply is often required, too.

If your water pump is not working, your building project could face serious setbacks, including delays. However, there are ways to overcome these unexpected challenges, one such solution being a water booster pump.

What is a Booster Pump Used For?

Somewhat self-explanatory, a booster pump is used to increase low water pressure and flow. It will help raise your water pressure to the desired level and can also provide pressure to move water from a storage tank or throughout a property/facility. A water booster pump is typically fitted where a municipal water line enters a building.

What is the Difference Between a Water Pump and a Booster Pump?

The scale of the construction project will decide what water supply you need. For instance, the project could be a new residential development or an extension to an existing building. Whatever the project, it’s important to know the difference between a water pump and a booster pump.

Water Pump

A water pump is used to transfer water between two points or to get rid of excess water. Their sizes and strengths vary depending on requirements. Water pumps fall into two categories:

  1. Centrifugal Pumps: This pump moves water into the pump and pressurises the discharge flow using a rotating impeller. Centrifugal pumps work well with a thin and high flow rate of liquid.
  2. Positive Displacement Design Type Water Pump: This pump is used to deliver fixed amounts of flow during mechanical contraction and expansion of a flexible diaphragm. It removes air from the lines eliminating the need to bleed the air from the lines. This type of pump is highly recommended to applications where there is low flow and high flow combination.

Booster Pump

A booster pump is used to deliver adequate pressure to the water supply. Connected to the mains, a booster pump is often seen as a backup or reserved for emergency use only. They use centrifugal force to boost pressure and can also be used to provide efficient water supply in tall buildings or places with changeable topography.

Should a Booster Pump Run all the Time?

When water becomes an issue on a construction project, and a booster pump is put to use, it’s only natural to think it should run all the time. This is especially true if time-consuming repairs are required.

However, a booster pump should not run continuously. If there is no demand for water, such as hours when work is not being completed, the booster pump should be shut off. Some booster pumps will shut down automatically when draw-off points are closed.

You can also utilise technology such as Campion Connect which integrates with existing pumping systems. Connect will monitor, identify, and communicate a potential problem before it becomes an emergency. Its accurate monitoring provides 24/7 feedback so you can optimise your pump system performance and reduce the chances of needing a booster pump.
